What is Nalla Neram?

Nalla Neram (நல்ல நேரம்) literally means "good time" in Tamil. It represents the windows each day when auspicious planetary Horas (planetary hours) are in operation, making those periods especially favourable for beginning new activities, prayers, travel, business dealings, and ceremonies.

Nalla Neram is a distinctive feature of the Tamil Panchangam tradition. While the concept of Hora (planetary hour) exists across Vedic astrology, the specific identification of auspicious windows as "Nalla Neram" is particularly developed in Tamil and South Indian practice.

The Hora System

Nalla Neram is calculated using the Hora (planetary hour) system. The daylight period is divided into 12 equal Horas (and the night into 12), each ruled by one of the seven classical planets in the Chaldean order:

☀️ Sun → ♀ Venus → ☿ Mercury → 🌙 Moon → ♄ Saturn → ♃ Jupiter → ♂ Mars → ☀️ Sun → ...

The first Hora of each day (starting at sunrise) is ruled by the planet that rules that day of the week — known as Vara in Panchangam:

  • Sunday → Sun · Monday → Moon · Tuesday → Mars
  • Wednesday → Mercury · Thursday → Jupiter · Friday → Venus · Saturday → Saturn

Calculation Steps

  1. Find sunrise for the day and location.
  2. Compute daylight duration = Sunset − Sunrise.
  3. Divide by 12 to get one Hora length.
  4. Assign the ruling planet to each Hora starting from the day-ruler at sunrise.
  5. Identify Nalla Neram: Horas ruled by Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, or Moon are classified as Nalla Neram (auspicious). Sun is neutral. Mars and Saturn are inauspicious.

Auspicious vs Inauspicious Horas

✓ Nalla Neram (Auspicious)
  • Jupiter (Guru)
  • Venus (Shukra)
  • Mercury (Budha)
  • Moon (Chandra)
✗ Avoid (Inauspicious)
  • Saturn (Shani)
  • Mars (Kuja)
  • Rahu Kalam (separate rule)

Note: Nalla Neram windows should also be cross-checked against Rahu Kalam — if a Nalla Neram Hora overlaps with Rahu Kalam, the Rahu Kalam takes precedence and that overlap should be avoided.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Nalla Neram?

Nalla Neram (நல்ல நேரம்) means "good time" in Tamil. It refers to the specific auspicious time windows each day, identified by traditional Tamil astrologers as favourable for starting new activities, prayers, and ceremonies.

How is Nalla Neram different from Rahu Kalam?

Rahu Kalam is a fixed inauspicious window based on the weekday and sunrise. Nalla Neram is the corresponding auspicious window — the best time to begin new ventures or perform rituals. Where Rahu Kalam says "avoid this," Nalla Neram says "prefer this."

Is Nalla Neram location-specific?

Yes. Like Rahu Kalam, Nalla Neram is tied to local sunrise and sunset times, so it varies by location. Thirukanitham.com calculates Nalla Neram for Chennai (IST) by default, with adjustments possible using the Nalla Neram calculator.

How many Nalla Neram windows are there each day?

There are typically 2–3 Nalla Neram windows per day, covering both the morning and afternoon/evening. Each window lasts approximately 90 minutes, corresponding to one planetary Hora.
