⭐ = Nakshatra is among the 13 traditionally auspicious stars for Tamil ceremonies. 🚫 = Avoid scheduling the ceremony during Rahu Kalam.

What Are Tithi Groups?

The 30 Tithis of the lunar month are traditionally grouped into five categories based on their quality for auspicious activities:

GroupMeaningTithisBest For
Nanda (நந்தா)Joyful1st, 6th, 11thAll auspicious work, travel
Bhadra (பத்ரா)Auspicious2nd, 7th, 12thMarriage, laying foundations
Jaya (ஜய)Victorious3rd, 8th, 13thCompetitions, business launch
Purna (பூர்ண)Complete4th, 9th, 14thGiving, charity, completions
Rikta (ரிக்தா)Empty5th, 10th, 15thGenerally avoided (not shown)

How This Calculator Works

For each day in the selected range, the calculator checks the Drik Panchangam and applies the following filters:

  • Tithi group: Only days whose Tithi belongs to the selected groups (Nanda, Bhadra, Jaya, or Purna) are shown. Rikta Tithis are always excluded.
  • Weekday: Tuesday and Saturday are blocked as per Tamil tradition.
  • Karinaal: Days marked as inauspicious in the Tamil calendar are excluded.
  • Rahu Kalam: The Rahu Kalam window is displayed for each day — schedule your ceremony before or after this inauspicious 90-minute period.
  • Nakshatra (⭐): Days where the Moon is in one of the 13 auspicious Nakshatras are highlighted, but this filter is not mandatory — all Tithis shown are auspicious.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Tithi groups (Nanda, Bhadra, Jaya, Purna)?
The 30 Tithis are grouped into five types: Nanda (joyful — 1st, 6th, 11th), Bhadra (auspicious — 2nd, 7th, 12th), Jaya (victorious — 3rd, 8th, 13th), Purna (complete — 4th, 9th, 14th), and Rikta (empty — 5th, 10th, 15th). Rikta Tithis are generally avoided for auspicious beginnings.
How is Rahu Kalam handled in this calculator?
The Rahu Kalam window is shown for each auspicious date so you can schedule your ceremony before or after it. The date itself is not excluded just because it has Rahu Kalam — every day has Rahu Kalam, but the ceremony should be timed to fall outside that 90-minute window.
What is the difference between this calculator and Muhurtham Dates?
The Muhurtham Dates page filters by Nakshatra (only the 13 auspicious wedding stars), Tithi name, and weekday. This calculator focuses on Tithi group (Nanda/Bhadra/Jaya/Purna) — which is the primary Tithi quality classification — and works across any date range you specify.
Why are Tuesday and Saturday blocked?
In Tamil tradition, Tuesday (Chevvai / Mangalvaram) is ruled by Mars and considered inauspicious for new beginnings. Saturday (Sanikazhama) is ruled by Saturn (Shani) and is traditionally avoided for weddings and auspicious events, though exceptions exist in specific traditions.
Can I use this calculator for events other than weddings?
Yes. The Tithi group method is used for all auspicious Hindu activities: house-warming (Grihapravesham), business inauguration, naming ceremonies, thread ceremonies, buying property, starting a new job, and more. Each tradition may weight the Tithi groups differently.
