Tamil wedding muhurtham dates are chosen by checking five criteria against the Panchangam for each day:
- Nakshatra: The Moon must be in one of the 13 auspicious stars: Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati.
- Tithi: Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi, or Trayodashi (both Shukla and Krishna Paksha).
- Vara: Tuesday (Chevvai) and Saturday (Shani) are blocked.
- Yoga: Inauspicious yogas (Vishkumbha, Shula, Vyatipata, Parigha and others) are excluded.
- Karinaal: Inauspicious days in the Tamil calendar are excluded.
- Tamil Month: Aadi and Margazhi are traditionally avoided for weddings and are excluded. Purattasi dates are shown with a note, as some families following Vaishnava customs avoid major ceremonies then.
