How Tamil Muhurtham Dates Are Selected

Tamil wedding muhurtham dates are chosen by checking five criteria against the Panchangam for each day:

  • Nakshatra: The Moon must be in one of the 13 auspicious stars: Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati.
  • Tithi: Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi, or Trayodashi (both Shukla and Krishna Paksha).
  • Vara: Tuesday (Chevvai) and Saturday (Shani) are blocked.
  • Karinaal: Inauspicious days in the Tamil calendar are excluded.
  • Tamil Month: Traditionally inauspicious months (Karthigai, Margazhi) may have fewer or no muhurtham dates.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many muhurtham dates are there in February 2027?
There are 2 auspicious muhurtham dates in February 2027 for Chennai, India. This count is based on Drik Panchanga with Lahiri Ayanamsha.
Can muhurtham dates differ by city?
The list of auspicious days is largely the same across cities in India. However, the exact time when the Nakshatra or Tithi changes may differ by location, so a day that is auspicious at sunrise in Chennai might technically become the next Nakshatra by sunrise in another city. Choose your location for the most accurate results.
What is an Excellent muhurtham date?
Excellent dates are those where the Nakshatra belongs to the top tier: Rohini, Uttara Phalguni (Utthiram), Uttara Ashadha (Uttiradam), Uttara Bhadrapada (Uttirattathi), Revati, or Hasta. These Nakshatras are especially favoured for all ceremonies in Tamil tradition.
Should I also check Rahu Kalam on my muhurtham date?
Yes. Even on an auspicious muhurtham date, the specific time of the ceremony should fall outside Rahu Kalam, Yamagandam, and Gulika Kalam. The muhurtham time itself is typically set by the family astrologer to fall during a strong Lagna and Nalla Neram window.
