What is a Karana?
A Karana (கரணம்) is half of a Tithi (lunar day). Since a Tithi spans approximately 12° of the Moon's elongation from the Sun, a Karana spans 6°. This means each day has approximately two Karanas. There are 60 Karanas in a complete lunar month, classified into:
- 7 Movable (Chara) Karanas — Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitila, Gara, Vanija, Vishti — that repeat 8 times each.
- 4 Fixed (Sthira) Karanas — Shakuni, Chatushpada, Naga, Kimstughna — that appear once at fixed positions in the lunar month.
Vishti Karana (Bhadra) is the most inauspicious and is always avoided for new activities, especially ceremonies and muhurtham.

What is Vishti Karana (Bhadra)?
Vishti Karana (also called Bhadra) is the most inauspicious of all Karanas. It appears 8 times in a lunar month and is strictly avoided for all auspicious activities — marriages, travel, business starts, and sacred thread ceremonies.
How many Karanas occur in a day?
Normally 2 Karanas occur in a day (one per half-Tithi). However, if a Tithi starts after sunrise, there can be up to 3 Karanas in a single day. The Karana at the time of a planned activity is what matters most for muhurtham.
Is Karana used for muhurtham selection?
